I think I've found out why I'm so jealous of motorsport in the US

As far as I can tell, there's not much over here that you can take any car, put some safety equipment in and go race. There's rallycross and banger racing, but nothing like a dedicated series like the SCCA, autocross or even Targa Tasmania in Au that you can just rock up to and race in a lesser class. Even rally has pretty tight regulations if you actually want to compete against other people.

If I've missed the point of the SCCA, or someone can point out to me a series in the UK that I could enter anything in, please do prove me wrong.

That sucks there's no grassroots racing organization there. But at least you guys get all the good motorsports.

Might be biased because i'm London based. I think the main reason is our car cultures are not really comparable, there's a lot of American identity in cars and racing it seems. Also, the expense of doing such things over here is insane compared to the US. Suitable cars, parts, fuel, places to race, are all far easier to come by over there. Also more people have the space to store their weekend racers.

There are grassroots series, but they're not as grassroots as the States. They're usually one-make series or karting.

There's not much that I could take whatever the hell car I like, throw a cage in and go and compete.

Then again, I do live a stone's throw from a large number of the best tracks in the world, so it's difficult to truly complain.

Grassroot racing at it's best, NASA + NOLA = Happiness! I love having a first class racing facility nearby.

Very good points, but there's a lot of UK racing history too. Albeit it's more at the higher levels of competition.

I agree with having little space to store the necessary equipment, but I disagree with motorsport being less expensive on this side of the pond.

I have looked at, and discussed at length, teams and championships in the UK. Based upon budgets on both sides of the pond, it is cheaper for me to live in the US and compete in the UK including flights. The distance traveled between circuits and the workshop are much smaller in the UK resulting in lower transportation costs for equipment and personnel.

I do agree however that we have a fantastic grassroots racing community.
